5 Days in Fukuoka, Japan

Enjoy five days in Fukuoka with day trips to Hiroshima, Miyajima, Miyazaki, Kumamoto, and Dazaifu.

DAY 1: HIROSHIMA & MIYAJIMA

HIROSHIMA

The Atomic Bomb (A-Bomb) Dome and the museum are located at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Fukuoka to Hiroshima: Shinkansen from Hakata Station to Hiroshima Station (1 hour). We purchased tickets at the train station.

Once you arrive at Hiroshima Station, take the Hiroshima tram (Hiroden) to the “Genbaku Dome-mae” Station (Atomic Bomb Dome Station).

MIYAJIMA

Itsukushima Shrine is located next to the Floating Torii Gate. Check the tides before visiting. When it’s high tide, it looks like the torii is floating and at low tide you can walk right up to it.

Miyajima Omotesandō Shopping Street is a fun shopping street with many souvenir shops and restaurants.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Hiroshima to Miyajima Island: Take the World Heritage Sea Route Ferry located at Peace Memorial Park. The ride is about 45 minutes.

Once you arrive on Miyajima Island, it’s a 10 minute walk from the ferry dock to the floating torii gate.

DAY 2: MIYAZAKI

Miyazaki is a three hour bus ride from Fukuoka. It was long but worth it. It was so beautiful!

We did a tour that included the bus ride to Takachiho Gorge, Takachiho Amaterasu Railway, Takachiho Shrine, and Amanoyasukawara.

DAY 3: FUKUOKA

We spent one day in Fukuoka. We visited the Nanzo-in Temple and did some shopping. Canal City Hakata is a large shopping mall with over 200 stores. Don Quijote Nakasu is just a 3-minute subway ride from Hakata Station to Nakasukawabata Station. You won’t need to leave the train station as it’s connected to Nakasukawabata Station.

Nanzo-in Temple
Hakata Issou and Tonkatsu Wakaba

Hakata Issou is a popular spot known for Fukuoka’s tasty Hakata ramen. There was a line but it went by quickly. The tonkatsu at Tonkatsu Wakaba was delicious and it’s only a 5-minute walk from Hakata Station.

Imonne Hakata

This soft and chewy gelato mochi is a must in Fukuoka! Imonne Hakata is located on the first floor of Hakata Marui, which is directly connected to Hakata Station.

DAY 4: KUMAMOTO

Kumamoto Castle

Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s most famous castles and only a 30-minute Shinkansen ride from Fukuoka.

There’s a free shuttle bus service that goes to and from Sakura-no-baba Josaien and Kumamoto Castle every 15-20 minutes.

Sakura-no-baba Josaien

Sakura-no-baba Josaien provides an atmosphere of a seventeenth-century castle town. It’s a great place to experience the food, culture, history of Kumamoto, and shop for souvenirs.

Kumamoto Castle Museum Wakuwakuza

The museum is located at Sakura-no-baba Josaien.

Kumamoto Station

Kumamoto Station is also a great place for eating and shopping!

HOW TO GET THERE:

Take the Shinkansen from Hakata Station to Kumamoto Station (we purchased tickets at the train station), then take a 10-minute taxi ride to Kumamoto Castle.

DAY 5: DAZAIFU

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is also a 30-minute train ride from Hakata Station. It’s one of Japan’s most important Shinto Shrines and a popular destination in Fukuoka.

Dazaifu Tenjin-dori is a pedestrian street that connects the train station to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It’s known for its traditional atmosphere, shops, and local treats like umegae mochi.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Take the subway from Hakata Station to Yakuin Station, then take the train to Dazaifu Station.

Nyoirinji Frog Temple

Nyoirinji Frog Temple is famous for its collection of over 5,000 frog statues and figurines. The collection started over 25 years ago when the chief priest returned from China with a small jade frog figurine. He wanted to make it a fun place to visit and it sure was!

HOW TO GET THERE:

Take the Nanakuma Line subway from Hakata Station to Yakuin Station, transfer to the Nishitetsu-Tenjin-Omuta Line to Mitsusawa Station, then take a 15 minute walk to the temple.

WHERE TO STAY

Oriental Hotel Fukuoka Hakata Station

Oriental Hotel Fukuoka Hakata Station is located next to Hakata Station, in the same parking lot. Below is the view of the station from the hotel. It was very convenient for the day trips! See my post of the Oriental Hotel Fukuoka Hakata Station here.
