Winter in Breckenridge, Colorado | Things to Do

Breckenridge, also known as Breck, is a beautiful mountain town in Colorado located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The base town elevation is 9,600 feet and the top elevation on the mountain reaches 12,998 feet.

Tips

High Elevation

Because of its high elevation, many visitors experience altitude sickness. It is important to stay hydrated before and during your stay. We took Waterboy hydration packets to help us stay hydrated. Also, if needed, you can purchase oxygen canisters (Boost Oxygen), which will help with breathing.

Clothing for Cold Weather

While we were there, the average temperature was 19°F and got down to -10°F on the morning we left Breckenridge. We wore thermals, gloves, waterproof (snow) boots, a waterproof jacket, and a beanie. Additionally, we wore a balaclava. It kept us comfortable in the cold and windy weather, especially up in the mountains while we were snowboarding.

Thing to Do

Breckenridge Ski Resort

Breckenridge Ski Resort is a beautiful family-friendly ski resort. There are long and wide slopes, which are great for beginner skiers and snowboarders. I would recommend purchasing your lift tickets in advance as Vail Resorts does limit lift ticket sales. Popular days do sell out and they do give refunds for any unused days. The lift ticket is good for all five Vail Resorts in Colorado: Vail, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Crested Butte. Visit breckenridge.com to purchase tickets.

Good Times Adventure

Enjoy a guided snowmobiling tour, dog sledding, or a relaxing sleigh ride at Good Times Adventure! We did the 2-hour guided snowmobiling tour and it was incredible! Riding on the trails in the mountains was such an amazing experience.

Main Street

Main Street is a charming mountain town that runs through the center of the Town of Breckenridge. We spent half a day on Main Street. It was enough time to walk the entire street, explore the shops, and have lunch.

Breckenridge Troll

Breckenridge’s famous troll, Isak Heartstone, is a 15-foot tall wooden troll sculpture located on the Trollstigen Trail at the end of Breckenridge town. It’s a short and lovely walk through the woods from the parking lot to the troll.

You can walk to the trail from downtown Breckenridge. You can also take the Free Ride Breckenridge Shuttle to the “Ice Rink” stop and walk to the trail. Because of the cold and snowy weather during our visit, we took the free shuttle from our hotel.

Frisco

Frisco is located between Breckenridge and Vail. Our friends were staying at an airbnb in Frisco so we made a short visit to the quaint town. We took a short walk from their airbnb and had dinner at Casa Sanchez Mexican food. It was delicious!

Vail Ski Resort

Vail Ski Resort is about a 45-minute drive from Breckenridge Ski Resort. It’s one of the largest ski resorts in the United States. See my post here for our day trip to Vail.

WHERE TO STAY

Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahan

We stayed in a one bedroom villa at the beautiful Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahan.

The hotel is located six minutes from Breckenridge Ski Resort and provides free shuttle service to Breckenridge town and Breckenridge Ski Resort. There are also snowboard and ski rentals available in the lobby of the hotel. See my post of the Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahan here.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Summit Express Shuttle

We took the Summit Express shuttle from the airport to Breckenridge and back. It took three hours to get to Breckenridge, because of the traffic. Getting back to the airport took two hours. The service was great and both drivers were very friendly and pleasant. They offer the choice of making a stop midway to buy snacks and use the restroom.

Free Ride Transit System

Breckenridge’s FREE RIDE provides public transportation service free of charge within Breckenridge and to Breckenridge Ski Resort. Many hotels also offer free shuttle service within Breckenridge.

My family and I had an amazing time and would highly recommend Breckenridge, Colorado for your next snow trip!

Happy Travels!
